Recently there has been another breakthrough in development of another computer technology, which can be controlled by the power of thoughts. This computer is said to help people who are unable to speak or move. This is mentioned in a report of Neural Engineering that volunteers have found a cursor moving on the screen just by simply “saying” words in their heads.
This device has been developed at Washington University School of Medicine. This device is a blessing to people who are unable to speak due to some brain injury or stroke. It is an amazing development with massive implications in many spheres. This technology can be used in controlling the wheelchairs or robotic arms to help disabled people and is expected to revolutionize the computer industry.
The concept lays its roots in some early examples of “reading mind”- which used to detect what people were saying to themselves in an internal dialogue. The technique used in development of this technology is called electrocorticography or ECoG, which connects the brain of people who are suffering from epilepsy, to a computer.
This technique was earlier also used to identify the epilepsy region of the brain and has also lead to various treatments for similar conditions. In the trial, the electrodes which emitted signals were recorded on computer. The people who undergone testing were told to move the cursor by saying or thinking pre-defined words. This technology has incredible potential for people who can’t communicate. Way to go!
