Super Mario, Doom II, WoW selected in “The Art of Video Games”

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is organising an exhibition which explores the evolution of video games – “The Art of Video Games”. Until April 7, voters selected 80 games from 240 video games appeared in the last 40 years. The Museum has released a list of the video games, which are selected by the public, to be included in the exhibition.

The exhibition will open from March 16 to September 30, 2012. It will feature a lot of  well known games such as Donkey Kong, Super Mario Brothers, SimCity,
The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo 2 and other lesser-known titles. In the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to play some of the video games such as Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, The Secret of Monkey Island, Myst, and World of Warcraft as part of the display.
However, it’s notable that sports and simulator games, and early-generation games such as Spacewar and Pong are missing from the list. There are few first-person shooters; Doom II is included as an entry in the DOS/Windows “action” genre.
The show will have large screenshot samples of  games from the vaults like The Bard’s Tale III: Thief of Fate, and Spy vs Spy. However, Gran Turismo 5, Call of Duty, Tekken, FIFA, Madden NFL, or even Guitar Hero will not be included.
